WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Starting next Tuesday, October 16, milling and resurfacing (the final phase of the North 3rd Street project) will cause intermittent delays on 3rd Street from Market Street to the MLK Parkway. This operation will be underway until mid-December. Crews will begin by removing the top 3” of asphalt from the existing road (aka “milling”), and will then apply the new final paved surface.
Traffic on 3rd Street will continue with one lane in each direction as it has for the duration of the project. The operation will, however, close cross streets intermittently and prevent left turns off of 3rd Street intermittently. Traffic attempting to cross 3rd Street at a closed intersection will be detoured to the nearest crossing on either 4th or 2nd Street. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible and should expect delays.
This is the final phase of the North 3rd Street Improvement Project. The water and sewer lines are installed and the activation of underground utilities is being finalized. When complete in mid December, the street will be restored to full width for driving. The 3” deep milling will allow the road to last at least ten years before another resurfacing is needed.
More information about the entire project, which involves new water and sewer lines, the placement of power and other utilities underground, new sidewalks, curbing, and pavement, as well as landscaping and other amenities, from Market Street to the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, can be found at www.wilmingtonnc.gov/north3rd.
