N. 3rd Street work finally done downtown

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the first time in months, North 3rd Street is completely open. Final landscaping and other details were completed this week in the northern end of the street.

The city held a ribbon cutting ceremony this afternoon to celebrate the project’s completion. The city has been working on these improvements since 2011.

All of the old power poles and overhead electrical wires have been removed. Over time construction slowed some business for local stores along North 3rd Street.

One gas station hopes now that everything is finished it will bring more business back their way.

“We had a very hard time of course during the construction time,” said Ash Tilhun at 3rd Street Family Fare. “We were very short in traffic because traffic wouldn’t come this way.”

Tilhun says everything looks perfect, and he hopes it will bring more visitors to the city. He also hopes they continue the improvement project around the city but is not looking forward to more construction.

All lanes of traffic will be open and back to the normal flow of traffic tomorrow.
